Smart Power: Bankrupting the United States

By Caomhin

I know that “Smart Power” is the term of choice for the Obama Administration’s foreign relations but we know how that is going, what with giving Iran all the time they need to fully develop their nuclear weapons program, that moronic “reset button” that was misspelled and given to the Russians, and a whole host of other stumbles.  Smart Power is also what VP Biden calls his Flintstone vitamins, which allows him to do such things as talk smack on Obama’s dog, reveal secret bunker locations, and drop this gem at a commencement speech at Wake Forest:

I believe so strongly, as you may recall when I was here in October, not in you particularly but your generation, that I don’t have a single doubt in my mind we’re on the cusp not only of a new century but a new day for this country and the world.

I’m sure the graduates at Wake Forest appreciate the fact that he doesn’t necessarily believe in them, but some people, somewhere.  Also, I’d like to remind Joe that we’ve been well into a new century for a few years now.

Let me, move, however, to my main point.  After all that trash talking on the Tea Party movement, and grassroots efforts to point out the obvious, that flooding the market with dollars, endlessly running the printing presses at the Fed, passing unfathomably large spending bills, bailouts, and so forth, Obama finally admitted that we’re out of money.  So I suppose when the media presents this, they’ll hail Obama’s honesty while they denigrated all those who warned of the dire consequences of Government spending run amok and the ill effects of such foolish policies.  We scorned when we did so, and we here at To Our Republic in particular, have voiced strong concerns over the coming hyperinflation, which still has yet to be properly spoken about in the media as more devastating and an unseen tax that will punish American citizens of low and middle incomes.

Indeed, even as Obama admits we are out of money, he is ramping up spending, on levels never before seen, to push through socialized medicine, a devastating cap and trade policy, and many more spending initiatives.  You’ll recall he said he would lower taxes for 95% of Americans, but if you believe that, than you’re living in a fantasy world.  Perhaps he means for an extremely short fixed period of time, because you need to understand his words, they’re ramping up for a major tax increase aimed at all Americans, and he will present this to the people as Vice President Elmer Fudd said, as being “patriotic.”  Liberals simply cannot help themselves, and their warped view of reality is quite frightening.   Remember how Liberals howled about Bush’s budget deficits (as did many fiscal conservatives did, albeit we did it as a matter of principle, Liberals did this a matter of politics) which exceeded $400 billion.  Keep that in mind as you read this:

The deficit for the current budget year will rise by $89 billion to above $1.8 trillion — about four times the record set just last year. The unprecedented red ink flows from the deep recession, the Wall St. bailout, the cost of President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus bill, as well as a structural imbalance between what the government spends and what it takes in.

Worrisome indeed. Consider also, we stand on the edge of losing our AAA credit rating as a nation due to the Liberal policies being embarked upon in this nation.  I remember speaking to Marissa after the 2006 elections which saw the Democrats take over Congress, and saying, “How bad can they possibly make things in two or three years?”  Well, I now have my answer, and I realize my own short sightedness.  All we can do now is work vigilantly to warn against policies that will put America on course to economic ruin and to remind people of what the great Milton Friedman so eloquently presented, and which is undeniably true, that economic and political freedom are interlinked and equally dependant upon each other.  We can not lose one and have the other, and that is why we will never fail to raise our voices and to fight for our causes.

Toomey Makes it Official

By Caomhin

Supremely awesome.  If you’ve been reading this blog for a while then you know how stoked I am for this.  I signed up on the website pretty much as soon as it launched and I’m in it for the long haul.  Everything I can do within my power and capabilities I’m going to do to get Pat Toomey in the Senate.  He is EXACTLY what we need in Congress right now, and we need him desperately both as citizens of the Commonwealth and of the United States.  It’s been my honor to have voted for Pat in his successful races for the House of Representatives in my district and in the Senate primary in 2004, and I’ll have that honor at least one more time.  I won’t go all out here, mainly due to the past posts and the ones that will be forthcoming.  However, I’m going to ask you to do a few things.

1. Visit the official Website

2. Sign up for updates

3. Spend some time on the site to get to know Pat and his stance on the issues

4. Do whatever you can to help get him elected.

Let’s get Pat into Senate in a landslide, it’s our fight now.

Our Teleprompter President

By Riss

Just because I have to try and find humor in our President being a complete disaster…TeleprompterTwo compliments of Twitter. A good laugh…

Let’s Go

By Caomhin

There are three things I want to touch on briefly in this post that further highlight the complete contempt that the Obama administration has for free markets, and as such, the freedom individuals have to engage in the marketplace and control their own destinies.  Despite the rhetoric and the cover from his flank that the mainstream media provides him, Obama is hell-bent on destroying capitalism in America.  No string of well crafted words can hide the true feelings of this administration.

First, I have repeatedly warned of the dangers of the cap-and-trade system as being nothing more than creating a new, astronomically large bureaucracy within the government, which will mandate new laws and taxes which will be passed along directly to the consumer.  Obama has now stated that he places the utmost importance on enacting this measure.  Expenditures on new technologies used in “green” energy production, and indeed anything that raises the cost of production in general inevitably results in a marked shift in production curves, as does an increase of taxes levied on entities from governments.  The effect of these increases is a new, higher, equilibrium price, which unfortunately, will most likely be at lower levels of supply coupled with a sharp increase in prices, both of which will be detrimental to American consumers, particularly lower and middle income earners.

Hidden behind the mask of “environmentalism,” this cap-and-trade scheme is nothing more than a means to inflate the size and power of government while punishing the citizens.  As an example on a much smaller scale, you can see the result of the S-CHIP bill on consumers who smoke.   The direct tax that was levied on smokers raised the price of a pack of cigarettes, not only by the amount of the tax itself, but indeed, even higher.  While non-smokers may shrug at this and believe that it does not matter, in economic terms, it absolutely does matter.  These price hikes are not simply absorbed by a company, it is passed on to the consumer, and while most Americans may not smoke, ALL Americans purchase good, consume utilities, etc.  The costs of cap-and-trade will be passed directly onto you, as dictated by government bureaucracy, which is almost always inefficient and ripe with corruption.

Second, with relation to AIG Bonus issue, we know now, with no uncertainty that Treasury knew about these bonuses for months in advance.  We know that Chris Dodd (D-CT) made sure that language was inserted into the unread Stimulus Package in order to make sure these bonuses were paid out.  Bonuses that were legally mandated by contract,  but undoubtedly were a horrible business decision from both an economic and public relations standpoint.  Cynicism seems to be something I am more inclined to be drawn to as of late, and part of me wonders if this whole thing was a charade.

I find it quite odd that Geithner, Dodd, and other Congressmen had raised this issue of AIG bonuses in the past with no public outcry being put forth.  It is no secret that in the last election cycle Obama and Dodd were the two largest recipients of contributions from AIG.  However, I do not think this was simply a matter of protecting the interests of their political donors.  Rather, I think this was merely a well thought out plan to further scapegoat financial firms and to stoke anger against them in order to increase the power and scope of the federal government and Treasury under Obama’s direction.  A bit paranoid sounding, I’m sure, but then there is the following to consider.

With the upcoming battle on Obama’s budget, one that will saddle the United States with nearly unfathomable deficits for many years and pushing the nation toward bankruptcy, he is also now seeking to expand the ability of the Federal Government to seize control of any business that the government deems to be of risk to the economy.  They are doing this with AIG as the “model” for their ambitions, but this type of power has no basis in Constitutional Law or within the free market as a whole.  Here is a brief excerpt to consider:

He said that in addition to the power to seize a company, the proposed authority would give the government rights to sell or transfer assets or liabilities of the firm and renegotiate contracts, including those with employees.

This is truly disturbing for anyone who believes in free markets and the right of self determination.  The market always self corrects and people always adapt to the conditions of the marketplace.  These types of policies are a strike at the heart of capitalism, which in turn is tied directly to our freedom as granted to us by our Constitution, and are a slap in the face of The Declaration of Independence as well.

Lost of course, in all of their discussions is the fact that people such as Barney Frank, who prevented investigations into Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae long before the housing bubble burst, have done more damage to the economy that AIG could ever do.  The housing bubble started to grow as a result of the CRA and subsequent efforts by the government, under President Clinton’s direction, to increase lending to people who normally would not have qualified for mortgages in the first place, caused a major swelling in the bubble.  As calls for investigations into the books of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac came from the GOP, the Democrats blocked such moves.  One has to wonder what could have been prevented if the GOP were allowed to have pursued these inquiries.

The last point I will touch upon, and thank you for staying with this long post, is that we know what we are facing at this time.  We are facing an assault on free market capitalism, our rights as individuals to make decisions in the marketplace, and our ability to chase our dreams, to succeed in reaching them, or to fail trying to do so, but that pursuit is our right, win, lose, or draw.  I am asking everyone who believes in the free market, lower taxes, and the right of self determination to fight to keep our rights intact.  Donate to a cause dedicated to do so, write a letter to the editor, talk to friends and neighbors, do whatever you are capable of to defend our rights.  It’s our fight now and everyone’s a starter, there is no backups, or bench, no last line of defense.  It’s us and it’s all or nothing. Let’s go.

Barack ain’t Jesus?

By Riss

Rev. Jeremiah Wright said that “Barack ain’t Jesus and that he won’t improve your child’s reading score.”  And said, “he is like any other President and he’s got to do what politicians do.”  It’s like a slam to Obama and a wake up call all at the same time.  Who would have thought this would have come from the KKK USA guy?  I guess in the grand scheme of things Rev. Wright did try to warn everyone before the election.  Keep on preachin’ it brother! (sarcasm, just incase you were wondering)

I don’t really have anything else to say, this just takes the cake.

Toomey to Challenge Specter

By Caomhin

You’ll remember how amped I was when it seemed eminent that Pat Toomey would be running for Governor of Pennsylvania.  I had an opportunity a couple of weeks ago to meet Rep. Toomey and talk with him a few minutes.  I thanked him for all of his service that he gave to me as a constituent of his district and also shared a few choice words about Sen.. Specter with regards to his voting for Porkfest 2009.  I don’t recall the exact words, but it was something along the lines of, “if I have to pull out one more the daggers he’s put in my back, I’m going to bleed out.”  Rep. Toomey probably doesn’t recall me or my comment, who knows. I can guarantee, however, that I’m not the only one who’s said something like this to him.  In fact, he’s probably heard something similar many, many times.

I had the opportunity to hear the President of The Club for Growth give a rousing speech on spending and fiscal responsibility and how desperate Pennsylvania is for real leadership.  He gave an articulate speech about limited government, free markets, and empowering the individual.  The bulk of the speech was directed at how the government here in Pennsylvania has been run under Fast Eddy Rendell, but he made key points about the situation on the federal level as well.  It was an incredible speech and I was convinced more than ever that he would be our next governor.  I don’t mind being wrong, in retrospect.

I’m quite excited to hear the news that Pat Toomey has decided to run a primary challenge to Arlen Specter once more.  More so, I have no doubt he is going to win the primary, of that, I am sure.  I will do everything in my power to make this happen.  I will help him win the Senate seat in any way possible.   He is EXACTLY the kind of person whose leadership we desperately need.

There are just a few points I want to make here before I wrap this post up.  First, I distinctly recall over the last few days Toomey warning Specter about the Check Card Vote, to not go along with this disastrous liberal anti-secret ballot measure.  Today, there was news out that Obama has told the unions that Check Card will pass sometime this year.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out what this most likely means.  Specter is going to vote for this bill as well, further weakening the rights of individuals and harming the economy in the process.  I think Toomey knows this as well and he can’t sit idly by and let our economy face disaster after disaster coming out of Congress.  He’s the right man for the job and exactly what we need.  I know it, he knows it, and soon the majority of voters in the Commonwealth will show this to be true at the ballot box (in a secret ballot, by the way).

The last point I’ll make on the implications of this is that with Toomey running for the Senate seat, I think our Governor’s race is going to come down to Tom Corbett and Pat Meehan (a Specter ally) in the primary, unless Joe Scarnati gets involved as well.  In the end though, we could pull off something great in 2010 with Toomey winning in the Senate and Corbett going to Harrisburg as our new governor.  It’s going to be a great election cycle for the Commonwealth.

Democrats and the DJIA by the Numbers

By Caomhin

I went through and pulled the numbers in an effort to visually demonstrate the effects that the Democrats have had on the economy.  I remember thinking to myself, after a horrendous 2006 election season, “how bad can they possibly screw things up,” under the false assumption that the Republicans could regain Congressional majority by adhering to core small government, free market beliefs.  Here’s the graph I have compiled, which I will supplement afterwards with some data points:

DJIA

So what do the bullet points represent?  Dates, Events, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (.DJIA).  Here are the data points:

Date Event .DJIA
4 January 2007 The Day After Democrats are sworn in as the majority in the Senate and the House. 12480.69
3 November 2008 The Day before the election. 9319.83
5 November 2008 The Day after the election. 9139.27
5 January 2009 A larger Democrat majority is sworn into office in the Senate and House. 8952.89
21 January 2009 The Day After Obama is sworn in. 8228.1
3 March 2009 End of Business Yesterday 6726.02

Note the decline since the Democrats first took control of Congress.  Take special note, too, that the first round of ill conceived bailouts did not exponentially accelerate the decline (this round occurred near the end of 2008), so despite the implementation of the first egregious assault on the free market, the markets still didn’t collapse upon themselves.  But You’ll notice that the rapid decline starting happening on January 5th, the day after the Democrats increased their majority stake in Congress.  It went into hyper drive on the 21st of January, the day after Obama was inaugurated.

The decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average from January 4th 2007 until January 5th 2009 was 3887.8 points, a decrease of 31.15% over the course of two years.  The decrease between January 5th 2009 and March 3rd 2009 was 2226.87, a decrease of 27.06%…in less than three months.

The news of subsequent bailouts and the environment has been known for sometime, the market always has a way of factoring in variable rather quickly from the time of announcements.  You’ll recall that interest rate changes are usually figured in the day before they are officially announced.  So obviously, something else here is at play, some variable that was previously unaccountable and unpredicted by the market that is now in process of being factored into the equation.

I believe that by highlighting the statistical data from these events and points in time, it’s quite obvious (and easy) to illustrate that since the consolidation of power by the Democrats on January 20th 2009, the markets are declining at a much faster rate than they previously had been.  The “Stimulus Bill”, the “Budget,” and other policies announced and being pursued by Obama and liberals in Congress were not accurately predicted.  Despite the warnings of many economists and advocates of the free market, experts were POSITIVE that Obama was not some radical tax and spend liberal, but a centrist, that he would not pursue destructive policies that would destroy jobs, drive money out of the private sector, and would not make Wall Street out to be some sort of monster.  They were wrong.  They miscalculated badly and now the markets are adjusting to this realization.

I’d also like to touch on one other point.  As Obama is going to be in permanent campaign mode for the next four years (good God, it’s only been 6 weeks), his allies in the media are going try to cover him as best they can.   It will be interesting to see from where they will start their data points when to go to hype him up even more, but rest assured, we will not let them get away with it.  We’re going to hold them accountable.

Yes, The Delivery Could Have Been Better, But…

By Caomhin

I didn’t get a chance to see Gov. Bobby Jindal’s speech last night, but I was definitely excited about Gov. Jindal having the opportunity to speak to the American people.  At Marissa’s urging I went online and watched the speech.  Yes, the delivery for this particular speech was not great.  I thought overall it was solid though.  The substance was outstanding.  Gov. Jindal conveyed a great message in a very articulate, logical fashion.  No games, no flair, no non-sense.  In contrast, yes, Obama, is a very energetic and flamboyant speaker, but that’s OK.

Stylistically, I’ve seen Gov. Jindal on his game many times, and he is an excellent speaker, a man dedicated to the people of Louisiana and to our nation as a whole.  He’s one of those rare individuals who sweats the details and does so with great pride, protecting the citizens of his state.  That can not be understated nor should it be underappreciated.

Now, regardless of how he did last night, you know the hard left was going to denigrate him no matter what.  They were also going to praise Obama no matter what he did, evidenced by the fact that reviews about his speech were out literally hours before he actually gave the speech.  Left wingers have been playing for blood for quite some time and they will trash and demonize anyone whom they perceive to be a threat.  It’s business and personal with them.  I think the treatment of Gov. Palin is ample evidence of that.

I also got a chance to watch a clip of his appearance on the Today show from early Yesterday.

Good stuff.  I thought he did much better on the Today show.  He’s great away from the teleprompter; he’s better when he’s speaking from the heart and not the page, something that can’t be said about Obama.  Marissa has made that point about Obama for a long, long, time.

Gov. Jindal is correct with his arguments and assessments.  His logic is extremely solid.  What he lacked in flair he made up for in substance.  He meticulously scoured through the stimulus bill, rejecting the parts which would be harmful to citizens of Louisiana and encroached upon the rights of the state.  So if nothing else, we know at least one person who actually took the time to read the bill, analyze it, and understand it.  That’s more than anyone in Washington did.  That’s real leadership.  That’s responsibility.  That’s the kind of thing we need in this nation.

Another Day, Another Trillion Dollars

By Caomhin

$1.044 Trillion to be little more exact, not that the extra $44 Billion should be ignored, but sufficed to say that the numbers are always growing, and always under-reported from our friends in the media.  First up, another $410 Billion spending bill (on top of the stimulus, mind you) stuffed with literally, “thousands” of earmarks, something already getting staunch support from known pork-lover Harry Reid.  Defending the indefensible and irresponsible is becoming all too common among our so called Congressional “leaders”, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.  Shortly after taking a massive loan from future generations of Americans with such vital programs as buying greener golf carts, they’re back at it again.

Remember when we kept telling people over and over again how a Democratic controlled House, Senate, and Presidency would make the deficits of the Bush years seem like chump change?  Recall, also, how we stated that they would just spend wildly and blatantly ram earmarks down the American’s people throats in violation of the trust of the American people?  Yea, we said many of things along these lines and were blasted by liberals who simply scream and wail anytime they are questioned.  Yea, well, proof is in the pudding.  Anyone still think they’re not going to get their taxes raised sometime in the not too distant future?  Remember, wealthy to liberals is defined simply as “employed.”

So that brings me to the second of today’s announcements of the coming heroin-addict like spend fest (yes, we’re far beyond Sen.. John McCain’s comparisons of Congress spending money like a drunken sailor, very far beyond that).  Obama is looking for a “down payment” (yea, down payment, not total funding, mind you) of $634 Billion for his health care program.  Still think we’re not heading for socialized medicine?  Anyone?  They keep saying no, but recall that there were provisions in the stimulus bill that gave the Federal Government more control of your personal health care now coupled with a massive spending request and this is just “getting started”.  After all, that’s what a down payment is, right?  After all, if it was one and done (which would still be yet another staggering debt being tacked onto the backs of Americans) it would be called a “purchase.”

For those keeping track at home, and I know I certainly am, we’re now at over $4 Trillion dollars spent by Congress and Obama in less than 5 weeks on the job.  Over $1 Trillion here, $2 Trillion for the coming TARP 2.0 (not technically spent yet, but they’re planning for it’;  anyone want to bet on it’s passage?), and over $1 trillion dollars for Porkfest 2009 when interest charges are calculated.  Still, they keep blaming President Bush for this, but guess what?  He’s not in office anymore.  He’s not the one authorizing this spending and signing off on it.  The national debt has skyrocketed since Obama and the 111th Congress took their respective oaths…and it WILL get worse.

Tit for Tat

By: Riss

This quick entry is for fun because I can’t even bare the thought of going down the road on Obama’s Congressional Address last night or Jindal’s embarrassing delivery of a wonderful GOP message.  Next time Governor Jindal, please try not to sound so much like Ben Stein. You are the hope of many young Republicans and we love you!

Anyway, not that we didn’t already know it, but Joe Biden is a complete moron.  I wonder if our Almighty President bangs his head off a wall every time Biden speaks?  I know that I would…

I felt compelled to post this because of how mad I was when everyone said that John McCain was out of touch…tit for tat.  I can sleep better now.
